desktop address book

This works best with Internet Explorer's "Outlook Express"

In order to follow this tutorial you may need to be proficient with navigating in your Windows Explorer. If you have problems in this respect, try the tutorial on

"Create A Folder"1, 2 and 3

Simple Drag and drop can esily create your Desktop Addressbook possibly and you will need to read no further. Click on Start, Programs, Accessories and look for the Addressbook icon. if found, right click on it and create Shortcut. Creating a shortcut will make a duplicate there in your Start,Programs,Accessories menu. Drag either one of the Addressbook shortcuts onto your desktop or your Quick Launch. If someone has deleted the original shortcut from the Accessories menu, you will have to read on. Sorry. Since you have now created an extra shortcut in your Accessories menu, you will have the option of recreating the Desktop or Quick Launch icon again if someone deletes your newly placed shortcut from either of the places you decide to place it. In other words, you have a backup shortcut icon.

Create Your Shortcut:

  1. Right click on Start and get into your Explore.
  2. Follow the pathway "C:\ProgramFiles\Outlook Express". (Click on the folder of Outlook Express)
  3. In the workspace to the right you will find an icon that is named, "Wab".
  4. Right click on "Wab" and left click "Create Shortcut".
  5. You now have a second "Wab" in the workspace that has a little arrow at the bottom. Right click on this shortcut and left click on "Cut".
  6. Exit out of Windows Explorer.
  7. Go to your Windows Desktop and right click in an empty space and left click on "Paste".

Note: With Outlook, do a Find for *.pab in (C:). This is the file that is your Outlook Addressbook.

Personalize Your Addressbooks Name:

Wab means nothing to me, personally. How about you?

  1. Right click on the, "Wab" shortcut on your Windows Desktop and left click "Rename".
  2. A window appears called Rename and offers you a spot to input your new name for your Address Book. (e.g. Mine is called "Beemer's Address Book")
  3. When you have a name in the slot, left click OK.

There you go!

Maximize Your Address Book Window:

( We made this a shortcut the hard way on purpose )

Isn't it a pain in the butt if every time you open your Addressbook, you have to Maximize the windows view? Have it open up in Maximized view automatically for you by following the steps below.

  1. Right click on the "Wab" shortcut that you have placed on your Windows Desktop.
  2. Left click on "Properties".
  3. On the Shortcut tab you will see a command heading of "Run:".
  4. To the right there is a slot window with a drop box arrow. Left click this arrow and left click on Maximized.
  5. Left click OK.

Beemer Tip:

The Address Book that you have is not only for E-mail Addresses and computer contacts. It can be used to record information on friends and acquaintances that don't have computers as well. At Christmas time you will receive several Christmas cards. Use the envelopes return address for filling up your Addressbook.
If you have a printer and your Addressbook is up to date, you can print it up as a memo if your printer program will permit this. A Memo printing will print all the information that you have filed into your Addressbook. As a Phonebook you will only get names and phone numbers.

You can drag the desktop icon for the Addressbook onto your taskbar as well. If an Addressbook gets left on your desktop after you have moved it to your taskbar, delete it. You don't need 2 of them readily available.
