ICQ stores all the events that come in a special folder within the ICQ program. This folder can get a little clogged up and sometimes ICQ will act up. I advise a clean up of your History Archive. Below are detailed instructions for completing such a task. Send this URL to your friends so that they may learn how to clean out there ICQ as well. |
Clean The Sent & Received Folder
| 1. |
Left click on ICQ menu button. |
| 2. |
Left click on Message Archive. |
| 3. |
Maximize this window for better viewing. |
| 4. |
In the left hand column, scroll up and make sure that the "Messages" and the "Message Dialog" folders are open. (There should be a (-) beside each) Scroll down the folder list under Message Dialog to "Sent & Received" folder. Click on this folder and you will see the messages that have been sent or received. |
| 5. |
The first message in the list is already highlighted. Use the scroll bar to the right of these messages to scroll to the last message in the list. |
| 6. |
Press and hold your keyboards "Shift" key while giving a left click to the last message in the list and release the "Shift" key. This will highlight all messages in the list. This might take a second or 2 so be patient. |
| 7. |
Now that all messages are highlighted you will right click on the highlighted messages and select "Delete" from the context menu. |
| 8. |
Now a box opens asking if you want to permanently want to delet4e all events. Left click on Yes. |
| 9. |
Depending on how many messages are in your Sent & Received folder, this might take a while. Watch the progress meter at the bottom left of your screen. |
Clean Out The System Folder
| 1. |
Next you will have to clean out the "System" folder. On the left hand side of your window, scroll down to the System folder. Give this a left click to open it for viewing on the right. |
| 2. |
In the upper right hand pane you will see all the system events such as list authorizations. You no longer need these in your database. They were only notifications that a user has sent or authorized a request to be put on your list or on their list. |
| 3. |
We follow the same steps to delete these events. Make sure that the first message is highlighted and scroll down to the last message in the list. |
| 4. |
Hold down your "Shift" key and left click on the last message in the list. Release the "Shift" key. |
| 5. |
Right click on the highlighted messages and select "Delete" |
Now Clean Out The Remaining Folders
| 1. |
Open the remaining folders and clean them out using the procedures that you have already performed above to delete the messages. |
| 2. |
Open the Deleted Items folder last and clean it out. |
| 3. |
Close the Message Archive window |
Database Converter
| Now that you have cleaned out the Message Archive you have to do a little maintenance. This next procedure can be used for fixing ICQ if you are experiencing any problems with the program features. Tell your friends about this one. |
| 1. |
Shut down ICQ. ICQ cannot be running when you use the database Converter. |
| 2. |
Left click on Start, Programs, and hover on the ICQ folder. The menu that pops out should have the Database Converter. Left Click on the Database Converter to run the program. |
| 3. |
On the first panel you will make sure that there is a dot in the radio button for "Fix A New Database. Click "Next" |
| 4. |
In the ICQ Owner slot, pick your nickname by using the drop arrow if necessary. If you have more than one user on the ICQ program, you should clean out their Message Archive as well. If you haven't cleaned out their archive, don't worry about it but do fix their database with the Database Converter. You do this after you have fixed your database and click on the button that reads Convert/Fix Another ICQ Owner. |
| 5. |
After you have fixed all the owners on your ICQ program, click "Done" and the ICQ program will automatically restart. |
| 6. |
