|
Basics
To Start:
| Click Start, Programs, Accessories, Multimedia, and click on Sound Recorder. |

To Record:
| First of all, you will have to
make a test recording. This will allow you to
make necessary adjustments for sound quality. The
recorder controls look and act like your VCR
controls. Click on the maroon coloured button to
start recording. Click on the play button to hear
what you have recorded. |
Sound Quality:
| Distance from the microphone to
your mouth should be approx. 8” or if you
are using a headset make sure that the microphone is
below your mouth by at least an inch. this way
you will not catch the wind from your mouth on
the recording. |
| Say your word or phrase in a slightly deep
voice and speak clearly. |
| Setting up your sound quality is another way
of reducing your recorded sound file size. We all
want to keep our file sizes down to a minimum so
the hard drive doesn't get filled up prematurely.
You can reduce the file size by clicking on File,
Properties, and in the "Choose from:"
slot use the drop arrow to select "Recording
formats". Click the "Convert
Now" button. |

| Now you can select the format
you wish to record with. I found that the sound
quality with the settings of "11,025
Hz, 8 Bit, Mono" does quite well
making a small file size and reproducing your
voice with good resonate sound quality. |

| Now that you have selected your
recording format click on the "Save
As" button and name it "Small
File Size". Click "OK"
3 times and you will be ready to make your
recording. |

Trouble Shooting
Recorded
Sound Volume Is To Low
:
Adjust microphone settings by
going to your toolbar and selecting Edit,
click Audio Properties, click on
the
button and adjust the microphone. Adjust the
slide button to a higher setting. This might take
a little experimenting. Adjust it to just above
half way. The recorded sound volume should be as
loud as other sound events on your P.C. |
Recorded Sound, Sounds " Tinny "
:
| Again click on the File,
and Properties, and this time go
into Playback Formats and make
sure that CD Quality is in the Name:
slot. If not, use the drop arrow to select it.
Another item to make sure of is at the bottom of
the Audio Properties window. You
will find 2 check boxes that read, "Use
preferred devices" and "Show
volume control on taskbar". Put a
checkmark in both of these boxes. |
Advanced
Editing:
| 1. |
The slide button is at the right after you have made a recording. |
| 2. |
Click & hold on
the slide button, and slowly move it to the left,
until in the modulation window of the recorder,
you see activity. Move the slide button back to
the right until there is just a touch of activity
showing so you don't cut off the end of your
recording. |
| 3. |
In the tool bar, go
to Edit, click "Delete
After Current Position". This will
remove all the dead time after the last recorded
word or phrase. A dialogue box will pop up and
tells you that so much of the time on your
recording will be removed. Click “OK” |
| 4. |
This is a similar
step-to-step 3 but come in on the modulation
action from the left this time.
Just click & hold the slide button and run it
from the current position on the right, threw the
modulation squiggles & bleeps until there is
a flat line again. You don’t have to leave
any room for error at the front of your
recording. |
| 5. |
Go to the toolbar
and click Edit, click "Delete
Before Current Position". A
dialogue box pops up and it tells you that so
much of the time on your recording will be
removed. Click “OK” |
Beemer Tip
:
| Listed under Effects,
(in the toolbar), There is the option of Add
Echo. I use this so it sounds like a
different person is announcing the events on my
P.C. (no ego here!) |
To Save
Your Recording
:
| 1. |
Select "File"
on the recorder, click "Save As",
and in the "Save In:"
slot, use the down arrow to select C:
drive, (or what ever drive you wish to save it
to). |
| 2. |
Now you have to
create a new folder by clicking on the "Create
New Folder" icon, (third icon over
to the right of the Save in:
slot). Type in your first name and followed by
sounds. e.g. "Gene’s Sounds"
and hit Enter
on your keyboard |
| 3. |
With this new folder
available now, double click on it, and in the
file name slot, type in a brief name for this
file. e.g. I made a recorded sound of "Dad.".
I made the file name "Dad" so the file
is self distinguishing and easy to find. |
Beemer Tip:
| Don't
close the sound recorder window after you make
and save your recording. If you wish to make
another recording click on "Edit" and
"Delete before current position". This
clears the sound you have made and will keep all
the settings you have made to the recording
format. Make your next recording. |
To Apply Your Event
To ICQ
:
| To reconfigure the sound events
for all of Windows applications plus ICQ's sound
events, Click the ICQ Menu,
select Preferences, select the Events tab, and
make sure there is a checkmark in Play Sounds,
click "Configure". (If
you are running ICQ 2000a, this is a little
different but you will find similar tabs and
areas that I will speak of here). |
| 1. |
Highlight the event
that you would like to configure, from the Events
window. |
| 2. |
Click on the Preview
button and if you wish to change this sound make
one up with the sound recorder and save it to
your new "Sounds"
folder. |
| 3. |
Now that you have
saved your new sound you can click on the "Select"
button |
| 4. |
In the look in slot,
use the drop arrow to select (C:)
Now your contents of (C:) are
shown in the window below. |
| 5. |
Double click your
"Sounds" folder and
highlight the sound that you wish to use for this
event with a single click. Click the "Open"
button. Preview the sound to make sure
it is evented. |
ICQ User Event
:
This will configure a Sound Wave for individual user’s on your ICQ list.
| 1. |
From your ICQ list, highlight the User that you wish to sound event. |
| 2. |
In the pop up menu, select Alert/Accept Modes. |

Click Select and go to (C:) drive by using the drop
arrow in the Look In slot. Find your "Sounds"
folder and the sound file you want to use for this User. Double click on the sound file. (User
I.D. equals the name of the User) |
You will notice a button below this slot for User ID called
Configure Default User ID Prefix Sounds. Click on it.
| * |
In the Play User ID
Sound box, choose before. |
| * |
All the slots below
have a sample of user events that if you choose
too, you can personalize as well. Just copy the
sample in your own voice. All the events listed
here are used for each person that you have
configured for User ID. In other
words, when you get a new user added to your user
list, you make a recording of there name and
apply it to the User ID
selection box, and all the rest has been done
already with the previous steps above. |
Windows Events
:
Windows supplies certain sounds
for certain events. e.g.: when you start Windows
you get the Microsoft Sound. I changed mine to Welcome
Back !
Open your control Panel and Open your Sounds
icon. Go through the events with the Preview,
play button and change them using the recording
and eventing instructions above. |
